STATE TIMES NEWSUDHAMPUR: The Eco Club of GCW Udhampur under the convenorship of Dr, Kewal Kumar has organized a webinar on the topic, “Impact of acid rain and other pollutants on environment”.Principal, Prof. Minu Mahajan was the chief guest on this occasion. Prof. B.P. Singh, from Department of Botany, GDC Bhadarwah was invited as a resource person who delivered a mind storming lecture on acid rain, its causes and effects. The lecture was attended by a large number of students and staff from various colleges/Universities of UT of J&K and other states. In his lecture, he discussed the meaning of acid rain, its composition, causes and preventive measures in a very lucid and simplified way. He elaborated the effects of acid rain on fishes and other aquatic organisms. He also explained the harmful effects of acid rain on forests and on humans. He pointed out various direct and indirect effects of acid rain on humans. Besides discussing direct effects like respiratory problems, asthma, dry cough, headache etc. he also stressed upon its indirect effect through food chain that are responsible for certain ailments to humans like brain damage, kidney problems, Cancer etc. In total, the webinar was really excellent and an eye opener for everyone. The session culminated with a healthy discussion. E-certificates were given to all the participants.Chief Guest, worthy Principal, Prof. Minu Mahajan in her address stated that in the present scenario, such awareness lectures are the need of hour in educational institutions. She desired that everybody should contribute and follow all the preventive measures to reduce the harmful effects of acid rain and other pollutants to our environment. Dr. Kewal Kumar conducted the proceedings of the Webinar and Prof. Sanjeev Upadhaya presented the formal vote of thanks. Prof. Sumita Rao, Prof. Parmjeet Singh and Prof. Tania Mahajan were among the others who graced the event with their online presence.
