R S PURA: Taking review of Social Welfare Department, the District Development Council (DDC) member from Suchetgarh, Taranjit Singh Tony on Tuesday urged the government to liberalize eligibility norms for differently-abled persons to enable them to avail benefits of several schemes launched by the Central Government.Chairing a review meeting of the Social Welfare Department, the DDC member said that scores of differently-abled persons are not able to take benefits of welfare schemes due to illogical norms. He added that the government must extend benefits of welfare schemes to all differently-abled persons without any grading criteria.Terming the eligibility norms illogical, the DDC member informed that as per the norms, the differently-abled persons with 80 percent disability only are eligible for National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP) while on the other hand persons with 40 percent disability are eligible for Integrated Social Security Scheme (ISSS). He asserted that if in all the schemes of social welfare, persons with 40 percent disability are eligible then why are they not eligible for NSAP. He sought immediate intervention of the government to relax these norms. The DDC member further directed field staff of Social Welfare Department (SWD) to resume touring of their respective areas of Suchetgarh and RS Pura. “The COVID pandemic is almost over and as per the latest guidelines of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) the field can resume their visits to ensure implementation of Centrally Sponsored and other schemes,” he added. In the meeting, officials of several wings of the Social Welfare Department were present in the meeting.
