JAMMU: The Government on Tuesday constituted Committee for examination of alleged Illegal Mining/operations of stone crusher units in and around river Tawi.“Sanction is accorded to the constitution of a committee for in depth examination of alleged illegal mining activities/operations of stone crusher units in and around river Tawi in violation of High Court directions,” reads the order issued by Manoj Kumar Dwivedi, Commissioner/Secretary, Jammu and Kashmir Department of Mining.As per order, the committee will be headed by O.P Bhagat, Director Geology & Mining, J&K as its Chairman and Dr. Raj Kumar, I/c Dy. Director, Geology & Mining will be its Member Secretary and R.C Kotwal, Director Finance I&C with additional charge of Mining Department and Romesh Gandotra, Assistant Mining Engineer with be its Members.The committee shall examine issue of operation of crusher units in Tawi river since 2018 and look into measures taken to curb illegal mining in Tawi river in compliance of High Court’s Order, the order stated and added, ” The committee also suggest measures to curb all malpractices with respect of mining and processing of river bed material from Tawi river besides measures for allowing regulated mining and disposal of river bed material to prevent flash flood incidents.the committee shall also examine the allegations made and the representations received about the high handedness of the department.“The committee shall be serviced by Directorate of Geology and Mining Department, J&K and will submit its report within a week’s time,” it added.
