Dear Editor,Several states across the country have begun to ease lockdown regulations, except in places where COVID-19 risk is high. But it’s important for all of us to continue to strictly follow all safety guidelines to avoid contracting deadly virus. With the passage of time people have started taking COVID lightly and have become non-serious. But it is very important that we should understand the gravity of situation and follow guidelines to stay safe.It is pertinent to mention here that adhering to guidelines and adopting other healthier lifestyle choices remain our best bet against novel coronavirus, which has no specific treatment or vaccine at the moment. To be safe we must follow the guidelines and make others follow too.One should understand that personal hygiene is as important as ever. The truth is, rigorous personal hygiene such as regular handwashing plan, using alcohol-based hand sanitisers, not touching face with unwashed hands, maintaining good respiratory etiquette, not touching objects or surfaces that are frequently touched (doorknobs, cab doors, elevator buttons, bus handrails), avoiding street food, disinfecting things and high-touch surfaces, etc, would be an integral part of the new normal. Avoiding public transport may be difficult for many people who don’t own a vehicle, although it’s best not to use it unless absolutely necessary. As businesses, schools, and community organisations begin to provide services, you should consider ways that can help protect yourself and reduce spread of coronavirus when using any type of transportation. One should also look for alternatives – for instance, you may walk to your office if you live close to your workplace, or you could ride a bicycle.Wearing masks is now mandatory in public settings. Make sure that you continue with this safety measure especially when going out and around people who don’t live in your household. However, masks should not be worn by certain individuals-babies and children below 2 years, people who are unconscious or have trouble breathing, or anyone who is unable to remove the mask without assistance, etc. Whether you’re out to purchase groceries, waiting at a bus stand or selecting seats on a train, try to keep at least 6 feet distance from people who are not in your household. Social distancing is here to stay and should be practiced along with other measures to stay safe from this deadly virus. Many people are looking for ways to boost their immune system against COVID-19, which directly and indirectly affects the immune system. Focus on nutrient-dense, fibre-rich fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, protein, healthy fats as they may help strengthen your immunity and improve your health. Cut back on foods high in refined sugar and unhealthy fats. Do moderate physical activity to stay healthy.Nirmal Magotra,Jammu.
