JAMMU: Intellectual Property Right (IPR) Cell, SKUAST-Jammu under the patronage of Vice Chancellor of the University Professor J.P. Sharma, organized two lectures on technical and legal aspects of IPRs including patents, Trademarks and Copy Rights. The guest speakers on the occasion were Er. Manik Gupta, Director (Operation), Patent Facilitator and Start-up India Program, and Advocate Arun Singh Manhas, Trademark Attorney, J&K High Court. Prof. J.P. Sharma said that the University scientists have developed ample number of innovative technologies in agricultural, veterinary and allied sciences which have commercial value; and are worth protection under current IPR regime at national and international levels.
However, he expressed dismay over slow pace in filing patent applications by the innovators in the University in comparison to other national institutes.
He exhorted upon the scientists and scholars to remain alert in filing patents for their innovations lest someone else should take benefit of their technologies. Professor Sharma said that discourses by the technical experts and legal luminaries on these aspects would enhance the pace of filing patent applications and seeking protection for their innovations.
He appreciated the efforts of Prof. Jag Pal Sharma, Director Research, Prof. R.K. Salgotra, Nodal Officer IPR Cell and committee members of IPR Cell for beginning the process of sensitizing the faculty and students on IPR issues.
He hoped that such interactions with experts would continue in future to improving tally of registered patents in the university.
Prof. Jag Pal Sharma, Director Research and Chairman University IPR Cell outlined plant varieties, products and technologies developed in the University and need of obtaining patents for the same.
He assured scientists to facilitate their efforts in filing applications for seeking IPR protection for their innovations. The guest speakers delivered detailed lectures on patents, copy rights and trademarks; and addressed the queries of the scientists and scholars. Present on the occasion were Dr. S.K. Gupta, Director Education; Dr. M.S. Bhadwal, Dean Faculty of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry; Dr. Bikram Singh, Dean Faculty of Agriculture; Dr. S.E.H. Rizvi, Dean Faculty of Basic Sciences and Dr. Rajesh Katoch, Dean Students Welfare. The lectures were attended by all Heads of the Divisions and scientists/teachers of Faculties of Agriculture, Veterinary and Basic Sciences; and large number of students.
Earlier Dr. R.K. Salgotra welcomed the dignitaries, guest speakers and participants to the session; and outlined the activities undertaken by the IPR Cell of the University. Dr. Manmohan Sharma conducted the proceedings of the session and presented vote of thanks.
