JAMMU: Division of Animal Nutrition of the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry of the SKUAST-Jammu developed an android app named ‘dudharoo’ to address the farmers’ issue. The app can be used by farmers on their smartphones to know the amount of feed to be given to their cattle and buffaloes. It suggests the type and amount of different feed ingredients as a balanced ration to be given to the animal based on their milk production levels.
It also suggests three different types of ration and farmers can select any one depending on the kind of green fodder’s availability. Feeding the balanced ration to the dairy animals decreases milk production cost, thereby increasing the farmers’ profit, a handout issued by university said and added that this is achieved through increased milk production, improved health and timely reproduction. This app is in Hindi and is in a simple format for the farmers to operate and understand. Division of Veterinary Physiology and Biochemistry of the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry of the University has developed another android app named ‘Vetvalues’ to help the practicing veterinarians, lab technicians and students. They can use this app to know the reference values for various physiological, biochemical and other parameters related to various livestock species. This app is a repository of more than 500 values providing information about sixty parameters of nine livestock species, including cattle, buffalo, sheep, dogs and poultry. This app helps the Veterinarians in the field to make a quick and correct diagnosis of animal health and thus serve the livestock farmers effectively. Both the apps are available as a free app on the google playstore and can be downloaded by searching the name ‘dudharoo’ and ‘vetvalues’. Once downloaded, farmers can operate both the apps without the internet.
