JAMMU: Promising wicket-keeper/ batsman Shivansh Sharma slammed a power-packed century to salvage J&K’s sinking ship and guide his team to somewhat respectable total of 205 runs in the first innings, after the team’s disastrous start against equally balanced Pondicherry on day-1 of the 4-day Cooch Behar Trophy match at Kandukuri Cricket Academy ground, Vizag on Monday.
As per report reaching here, Pondicherry, in reply were comfortably placed at 93/1 in 26 overs at the draw of stumps today.
The dangerous opening batsman, Neyan Kangayan, who had the scores of 126 and 44 in the two innings of Pondicherry’s first outing in Cooch Behar Trophy this season against formidable Mumbai, was unbeaten on 61 off 74 balls and number-3 batsman Karthiraja U was unbeaten on 3 runs off 17 balls. Another opener Shashank was the only batsman to be dismissed on 23 off 57 balls. He was bowled by left-arm spinner Ranjot Singh, who bowled 6 overs by conceding 23 runs.
Earlier, winning the toss and batting first, J&K lost first five wickets for 41 runs in 15.2 overs, before Shivansh came to their rescue. Shivansh showed grace, guts, fluidity and brilliance. He scored 110 off equal number of balls, studded with a series of boundaries. Yuvraj Saini (21), while Gursimran Singh and Ranjot Singh (19 runs each) were the other contributors. For Pondicherry, medium pacer Jyothi Swaroop B and right-arm leg spinner, Rohan S captured 3 wickets each, while KG Shree Varshan, Nitin Pranaav V and Saichetan shared one wicket apiece.
