SAMBA: Preliminary rounds of the competition took place on the opening day of the Samba District Weightlifting Championship being organised by District Samba Weightlifting Association under the aegis of J&K Weightlifting Association at GDC Samba campus, here on Saturday.The event was declared open by President of the Association, Harbhajan Singh in the presence of Vice President and former Divisional Sports Officer of JKSC, Ravi Singh, General Secretary, Yudhvir Singh and senior weightlifting coach of JKSC, Inderpal Singh.Earlier, Samba District Weightlifting Association President, Kulbir Singh welcomed the distinguished gathering while Jangbir Singh, General Secretary presented detailed about the event. The technical panel was led by qualified officials, Dhanraj Singh (NIS), Amit Sharma and Muneesh Charak.The opening day of the competition witnessed preliminary rounds in different weight categories of men and women. A healthy crowd of young college students witnessed. Around 60 young participants, including 10 girls, have registered for participation in different weight groups.“Hosting of events at the colleges and school campus definitely help reach out to the youth to take up sports in a big way. Certainly new faces will join the game start working hard to excel at the National level,” said President of the Association, Harbhajan Singh.
