JAMMU: Veteran mountaineer and Co-Chairman of the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF), North Zone Committee, Ram Khajuria has resigned from the post.In his resignation letter sent to the president IMF, New Delhi, Khajuria has cited ‘certain personal reasons’, which he has not elaborated. However, going by the deliberations, he had with his trusted confidants, and the nature of activities of Tawi Trekkers J&K, Ram Khajuria has been conducting for the last few years, it seems likely that he intends to focus more intensely on those adventure activities of his parent club with an aim to promote adventure tourism in the hitherto unknown beauty spots of Jammu Region and thus benefit the rural population of Jammu. It may be mentioned here that Ram Khajuria, the founder president, who also served as a general secretary of Mountaineering Association of J&K (MAJK) for a long time, was elevated as Co Chairman of IMF North Zone Committee about a year back after serving as secretary. Ram Khajuria remained secretary of the IMF North Zone Committee for about 15 years.Khajuria, who is the founder general secretary and now president of Tawi Trekkers J&K, formed over 38 years back in 1982, was passionately devoted and committed to the promotion of adventure activities among students. It was because of his untiring efforts, the Association has at present the top ranked woman sport climber of the country and an international medalist and second and third ranked sport climbers of India in the Senior Boys category. In mountaineering also the club has a long list of distinguished mountaineers who have scaled Mount Everest, Kangchenjunga, Manaslu, Shivling peak, Mount Vinson and a number of other formidable peaks. “Despite all these achievements Ram Khajuria, a distinguished national judge in sport climbing, laments the fact that Sport Climbing though included in Tokyo Olympics -2021 and Paris Olympics-2024 still awaits its inclusion in SRO 349 by the Government of J&K even after four years of its recognition in 2016 by International Federation of Sport Climbing as an Olympic discipline and consequently J&K sport climbers and mountaineers are not getting the facilities they deserve,” on being contacted, General Secretary of the Tawi Trekkers, Shawetica Khajuria said.
