Protests against ‘anti-encroachment’ drive rocks Jammu

JAMMU: The inhabitants of Sunjwan and Bathindi areas in Jammu city on Friday morning held a protest against Government and JMC authorities after an anti-encroachment drive were started in wee hours.
As per reports, the drive was objected by some locals, who resorted to stone pelting, damaging a police bus and other machines. The protesters raised slogans against municipal authorities and other concerned Government departments for the action.
They said that amid darkness, authorities pressed into service its men & machinery to demolish some structures in the area, without serving any notice to owners. “The area is being targeted specifically time and again despite fact that there are a number of structures on state land in other localities of Jammu,” they alleged.
They said that the case is sub-judice and authorities should serve notice to residents regarding before demolishing structures in area. “Slogan of Prime Minister that everyone will get a house in India is also proving hollow on ground as poor people are being targeted in Jammu,” they said, urging authorities to stop demolition.
However, officials said that driver of a JCB was injured during the incident and machinery also damaged.
