Ashutosh SharmaFungal infections can be devastating. And one in particular- Mucormycosis is adding burden to a country already in a deep COVID crisis. We have seen reports from India of infections related to Mucormycosis, often termed as ‘Black Fungus’ in patients with COVID-19, or who are recovering from coronavirus. Union Chemical Minister Sadananda Gowda, on May 25, said that over 11,700 cases of Mucormycosis have been identified in India.Mucormycosis, previously known as zygomycosis, is also called as black fungus. It is a fungal infection, generally occurring in people with low immunity. It belongs to the family Mucorals. Fungi in this family are usually found in soil or decaying matter. At laboratories, these fungi show a black brown fuzzy appearance. Fungi that cause human infections grow well at body temperature and in acidic environments.Generally, Mucormycosis is classified into five types depending on type of body organ infected.
