‘Makar Sankranti to be celebrated on January 14’



JAMMU: Makar Sankranti will be celebrated on Thursday, January 14, 2021. It was informed by President of Shri Kailakh Jyotish Avem Vedic Sansthan (SKJAVS) Trust, Mahant Rohit Shastri in a press statement issued on Tuesday.
Shastri further said that Makar Sankranti is the widely celebrated harvest festival in India. “It is dedicated to Bhagwan Surya Dev. Makar Sankranti marks transition of the sun into zodiacal sign of Makar (Capricorn) on its celestial path, which is the first change in zodiac after winter solstice. The festival is celebrated to observe the day, which marks shift of the sun into ever-lengthening days. The festival is a seasonal observance as well as a religious celebration,” said Shastri, adding that in Tamil Nadu Makar Sankranti or Sankranthi is known as Pongal. In Gujarat and Rajasthan, it is known as Uttarayana while in Haryana and Punjab, Makar Sankranti is known as Maghi.
Makar Sankranti Punya Kala in Jammu will start at 07:37 AM and end at 2:48 PM, he added.
