JAMMU: Ist Mehar Singh Memorial Veterans’ (above 45) Football Cup got underway on a positive note with senior players appreciating the initiative by Young Hero Club and National and International Footballers Forum (NIFF) at GGM Science College ground, here.
“A big crowd of senior players turned at the venue to the surprise of the organising committee. Everybody appreciated initiative of providing those top players of the past a platform to reunite with their teammates and recall the heroic moments of the past,” said General Secretary of the Young Hero Club and member of the NIFF, Rajesh Sumberia.
In total, eight teams are taking part in this event on knock-out basis. The opening match won by Alliance FC, who beat Young Hero FC 3-2. “The next match is scheduled to be played between Vijay Club FC and Morning Club FC at 5 pm on April 11 (Sunday),” informed Rajesh.
Earlier, the event was declared open by General Manager, J&K Grameen Bank, Ajay Kohli, who was chief guest while Chairman of Delux Bus Owners Association, Balbir Singh, Amarjeet Singh of Sleeper 2-2 Coach Bus Association, Varinder Mahajan and Nitin Mahajan were Guests of Honour.
Among the special guests were international footballers, Ramesh Chander, Amardeep Singh and Rajesh Sumberia as also those National players, Mohit Verma and Gourav.
The event is sponsored by Baba Tours and Travels and supported by veteran players. “Since most of the participations have not practiced the game for long, the organising committee has reduced the playing area with less time duration of the game,” disclosed Rajesh.
