Maharani Lakshmi Bai attained Veergati on June 18, 1858, at Kota’s Sarai in Gwalior. Her sacrifice day is celebrated as Shaurya Diwas. ‘Jhansi ki Rani Laxmi Bai’ awakened spirit of independence in freedom struggle of 1857. Born on November 19, 1835 at Varanasi, Rani Lakshmi Bai’s childhood name was Manikarnika. She was affectionately called as Manu or Chhabili in her childhood. Her mother’s name was Bhagirathi while father’s name was Moropant Tambe. In 1842, she got married to Raja Gangadhar Rao, the ruler of Jhansi, and became the Queen of Jhansi.
Despite being a woman, it was not easy to become a rebel in a male-dominated society and become immortal. It was not easy for a woman to stand against whole empire. Today, on the sacrifice day of Rani Lakshmi Bai, we are paying homage to the great soul. It is the name of that strong determination, valor and courage who achieved that position in her short life, whose example is rare even today. There are many people whose life or achievements get respect after their lifetime, but those people are very few who in their lifetime get respect, not only in hearts of their loved ones but also in hearts of their opponents.
Rani Lakshmi Bai was one such personality who not only inspired people in her lifetime, but till date is a source of inspiration for all. At a time, when the British, who were injured by revolt of 1857, started more atrocities on Indians, the roar of a woman shook the foundations of the entire British Empire. This roar of Rani Lakshmi Bai was not limited to Jhansi only and not only heard in whole country, but that roar filled children of country with courage. In fact, for Jhansi, for the freedom of her land, to free her subjects from atrocities, the fire that was burning in the heart of Rani Lakshmi Bai, spread all over India on June 18, 1858 with sacrifice of Rani Lakshmi Bai. She had ignited the fire of that Yajna by sacrificing her own life, which was completely sacrificed on August 15, 1947. She laid the foundation for saving the country. A way was shown. Lessons of fearlessness were taught, the path to immortality was shown. Her courage and valour can be gauged from the statement of General Hueroz that if one percent of the women of India became addicted to freedom like this girl, then all of us would have to leave this country and run away. Imagine a woman with a little boy on her back, a horse bridle in her mouth and swords in both her hands. We have seen this scene in their idols, in their pictures, but this brave soul was not an idol, a picture. No, it is not an imagination of any heroic poet, it was a reality. Maybe that’s why she is alive today and always will be. She is immortal and will be there for centuries, know why, because she is not only alive in the hearts of the people of this country, she is still alive in the hearts of her enemies, in the hearts of her opponents, in the hearts and minds of the British with whom he fought. The British were defeated by the might of Rani Lakshmi Bai, who was fearlessly leading a war, the result of which she knew. They were defeated by the spirit of the queen who had the courage to carry her little child on her shoulder and play the bugle of the battlefield. Maybe that’s why they respected her too. Many British officers of that period were reluctant to admit that Rani Lakshmi Bai was a unique and rare combination of bravery, intelligence, strong determination and administrative ability and considered her as her most dangerous enemy. If the enemy is compelled to praise/praise the power, then the character can be judged on its own.Today when we are talking about a brave woman of 19th century in 21st century, remembering her, paying homage to her on her sacrifice day, I believe that it should not be just a ritual. It should not be a programme but an opportunity. An opportunity from which we can learn something
