Dear Editor,Every year on March 22, we celebrate World Water Day but the very next day we just forget to save water. This year’s theme ‘World Water Day’ is Catch the Rain and we should come forward to make it a success. We all know water is the basic requirement for life on earth. All metabolic activities require water.Water is largely needed in domestic activities, industries, agriculture, and construction. For these activities, the sources of water are limited to rivers, lakes, ponds, streams and rainwater.Though 70 per cent of the earth surface is water, only 3 per cent is fresh water. Thus, for the consumption of water by the world, very little water is left and this is the reason why problem of water shortage is arising. The only solution to this problem is through effective management and conservation of water. Water conservation is possible by two main steps, cleanliness of water and saving water from wastage.Cleanliness of water is not only issue, but the amount of water that we need is also a concern. To ensure that we have a sufficient amount of water available, we need to teach and practice good water conservation techniques. And for practicing water conservation at the domestic level, local communities need to take an active part in planning and implement water management schemes.People should look for installing flow regulators, turning-off taps while not in use, etc to help in water conservation.Efficient agricultural use of water is a major step in conserving water. Proper canals should be made to divert water efficiently in all parts of the farms.Sprinkles should be installed so that the flow of water is regulated to all the areas. Rainwater harvesting is another measure of water conservation. Rainwater harvesting is accumulating and storing of rainwater for reuse, before it reaches the aquifer. This is what this year’s theme ‘Catch the Rain’ is all about. Rain collected from the roofs of houses and local institutions can make an important contribution to availability of drinking water. It will supplement the dirty water level and increase urban greenery. It can be helpful in flushing bathrooms, laundry garments, watering the garden, and washing cars etc. these uses alone can save majority quantity of water utilized by a typical home.Another important aspect is forest conservation. Forest conservation is on effective way to water conservation.Forests are important water regulators. Their root structure, soak up the water and keep releasing it slowly throughout the year, thereby contributing to replenishing groundwater supplies, reducing soil erosion, and releasing moisture into the atmosphere.Wastewater treatment and avoiding water pollution are the effective means of water conservation. Pollution can be stopped immediately on individual level, which will collectively reduce water pollution greatly. It is often seen that people pollute the river water by throwing garbage, ashes, and wastes in flowing water. The factories dispose of chemicals and garbage in the river water which makes it dirty. This water cannot be used further for any domestic purpose. The main source of water for human consumption is rivers. We must understand that if river water gets polluted, it will become harmful for consumption. Therefore, through your esteemed daily, I would request all the individuals to make efforts to save water and keep the water sources clean. It’s high time that we should wake up and start conserving water at each and every step.Sonali Gupta,Jammu.
