Ladakh University, IALS start weekly online talk-series



LEH: University of Ladakh in collaboration with International Association for Ladakh Studies (IALS) started a weekly online talk series from January 20. The first session was attended by many dignitaries from University of Ladakh, members from IALS, students and staffs from different colleges of Ladakh.
Dr. Rinchen Dolma introduced the session and laid out the importance of such online programme for the students of Ladakh to familiarize them with ongoing research works.
Thereafter, Dr. Sonam Wangchok, President IALS, briefly introduced IALS and it’s contribution in the field of research in Ladakh. Mr. Imteaz Kacho, Registrar, University of Ladakh, talked about the importance of such programmes for students of Ladakh and stressed on the willingness of UOL to organise such events in offline mode for better understanding and interaction.
Prof. Deskyong Namgyal, Dean Academic Affairs, UoL, discussed about university’s future visions about research prospects and stressed upon inculcating research interests in Ladakhi students related to different aspects of Ladakh.
For the starting session, an eminent archeologist, Quentin Devers was invited to speak on the title “The ancient history of Ladakh: an exciting past only archeological can unveil”. Through his presentation, he stress on the importance of archeological sources in understanding the early history of Ladakh highlighting the lack of proper written records for the period. He covered the history of Ladakh from 7th to 16th centuries by analysing different archeological sources. According to Quentin, Ladakh was influenced by different cultures from neighbouring regions like Central Asia and Tibet and concluded on the note that Ladakh history witnessed influences of various cultures. This was followed by question answer session which ended with active participation and discussion from the participants.
The programme was concluded by Dr. Amjad Ali, Dean Student Welfare UoL and advisor IALS expressed his heartfelt gratitude to worthy Vice Chancellor for his support and guidance to organise this series. He thanked Registrar, UoL and DAA, UoL for sparing their time and support for the talk and also thanked Quentin Devers, the speaker of the day and participants for making the event a success.
He also highlighted his association with IALS in the field of research and expressed gratitude to the executive members of IALS led by president, Dr. Sonam Wangchok for the collaboration in organizing the weekly lecture series.
