JU celebrates National Mathematics Day

JAMMU: Department of Mathematics, University of Jammu, celebrated National Mathematics Day by organizing an online lecture on life and works of great Indian mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan by an eminent mathematician Prof. Ambat Vijaykumar, Cochin University of Science and Technology.
The lecture was inaugurated by Prof. Manoj K. Dhar, Vice Chancellor of University of Jammu. In his opening remarks Prof. Dhar talked about the importance of National Mathematics Day and the genius of Srinivasa Ramanujan who in such a small span of life (1887-1920) created deep mathematical formulas which earned him the fellowship of Royal Society of London.
Prof Dhar also discussed the impact of mathematics on other branches of knowledge and its importance in the development of humanity.
Prof. K. S. Charak, Head of Department of Mathematics, after giving the history of National Mathematics Day and its objectives, introduced the speaker Professor Ambat Vijaykumar by reading out his very rich profile which included his consultantship of the Malayalam Publishing group for the publication of the Malayalam translation of Robert Kanigel’s “The Man who Knew Infinity” a book about life and works of Ramanujan.
The speaker delivered a detailed and illuminating online lecture on Life and Works of Ramanujan. The lecture was attended virtually by more than one hundred participants including students and teachers from the Mathematics department of different colleges and Universities of this part of the country.
For the inspiration of students the speaker referred to two references on Ramanujan’s life and work: A Mathematicians Apology by G.H. hardy and The Man Who Knew Infinity by Robert Kanigel, even the general public can also read these books to get an idea of the Genius of legendary Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan whose birth anniversary is celebrated as National Mathematics Day on December 22.
