JAMMU: Apni Party Provincial President Women Wing Namrta Sharma on Wednesday called on Lt Governor Manoj Sinha.In a statement to the press, Namrta said that she presented a memorandum of demands to the Lt Governor and sought his attention towards the issues of public importance.Namrta demanded accommodation and security of elected District Development Council (DDC) women members, and political reservation of women in J&K.The demand for accommodation, vehicles and security was made following complaints that the elected women DDC members were facing problems.She also demanded establishment of counseling centres in Women Police Stations with the involvement of psychologists and the family matters should be resolved through consultation and victims should not be terrified.“If the police stations work in an arrogant manner and treat the complainant like an accused, the purpose for establishing women police stations will fail the motive,” she said.She also demanded “Women cells should be rechristened as Women Welfare and Mediation Centres. The nomenclature Cell is bad and disgraceful which should be changed accordingly which does not make women uncomfortable.”She also demanded that the Govt must ensure with the help of the Social Welfare Department to hold programmes in a scheduled manner throughout the year in schools, colleges and universities to spread awareness among the women/young girls about their rights.In case of sexual harassment of women in work place, she demanded that the committees should always be headed by a woman and majority of members in such committees should be women so that the victim can get the justice.“Free of cost education to the girl child from primary upto to higher secondary school in J&K to promote education among the girls. The economic situation of all the families is not equal and therefore, the girls many times have to drop out of the schools,” she said.She also demanded coaching to the girls for professional courses and civil services.Namrta also demanded enhancement of pension for women and other issues related to pension should be resolved as early as possible.She demanded encouragement of women in the industrial sector, especially manufacturing in J&K. The women at college level should be given motivational lectures and their interaction with the successful industrialists should be arranged to motivate them towards the sector. Besides many other issues were highlighted before the Lt Governor who assured that he would look into the issues.
