JAMMU: A team of CBI raided Sainik School, Nagrota on Wednesday in connection with alleged misappropriation of huge funds amounting to lakhs. The team, after seizing all relevant records, interrogated the staff including clerks and Vice Principal was for about 10 hours. According to sources, the records scrutinized so far revealed that in years 2019 and 2020, the school management bought goods worth more than Rs 1 crore from open market at expensive prices.During investigation, it was found that the purchases took place during the tenure of acting Principal Lt Col Pawan Kumar and Administrative Officer Major Angat, who has been transferred.CBI team also found that an article, worth Rs 2 lakh in market, was bought for Rs 4 lakh from the market. “School management has issued tenders for it and shopkeepers gave three quotations. It was found that despite quoting high price, the goods were bought from the same shopkeeper at expensive prices from the market rate”, CBI sources said adding that back-dated signatures of officers were also found on some of the quotations, due to which scam in the purchase of school items came to fore.Sources further said that during last financial year, some clerks were appointed in school from backdoor and even caretaker Principal wasted Government money, for selfish reasons, by installing 22 plastic speed breakers within a distance of 1 kilometer. CBI sources further said that the electronic barrier installed at the gate of the school, which costs around Rs 80,000 in market, was bought for Rs 2.50 lakh, there causing huge appropriation of funds by the school management amounting to lakhs of rupees. The CBI initiated action on recommendations of the Ministry of Defense.Earlier, the Defense Ministry officials had also conducted a preliminary inquiry into the alleged misappropriation of funds, on a large scale, by Sainik School Management. After enquiry, the Defense Ministry recommended the case to CBI for detailed investigation. Accordingly, a team of 14 CBI officers raided the school at 10 AM on Wednesday and seized all record kept in the Administrative Officer’s room for detailed scrutiny.CBI officers interrogated the then Principal Pawan Kumar and clerks for hours. At a time, when case of misappropriation of funds by school management came to light, Pawan Kumar was working as the acting principal of the school. The new principal A K Desai has taken over the charge from Pawan Kumar just two months back.
