Horticulture Deptt organises farmers awareness camp


KHOUR: Department of Horticulture, Block Khour under the chairmanship of Director Horticulture Jammu Ram Savak organised farmers awareness camp at Panchayat Mallah on Friday wherein large number of progressive farmers participated. DDC Bushan kumar Bral, Sarpanch Mallah Naresh Paul, Panch Krishan Lal and other PRI members along with the representatives from SKUAST Jammu, NAFED and private companies were also present on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion Director Horticulture discussed health benefits of fruits for healthy living that can only be achieved by following the application of proper spray schedules that have minimum residual effects and elaborated that fruits like mangoes apples grapes have harmful effects on health if such things are not taken proper care off.
Chief Horticulture Officer Jammu Sarabjeet Singh also made the farmers aware that the health benefits of fruits depend on how they are ripened and the best course will be to allow them to ripen naturally and the most commonly used chemical is called ethephon (2-chloroethylphosphonic acid) which is safer and ethylene production is enhanced which results in faster ripening whereas another chemical that is regularly used calcium carbide produces acetylene, which is a substitute of ethylene and is, however, full of harmful problems.
CCI Jammu Vikas Anand also spoke on departmental schemes. DLSMS Entomology Dr Sanjeev Kumar also delivered lecture on management of insect pest in fruit crops. DLSMS Pomology Dr Sandeep Gupta also aware the farmers of organic cultural practices to be adopted for production of fruits that can fetch better price to the farmers in the market.
