While drinking a cup of tea sip by sip on the balcony of my lofty rented building what I saw is impossible to summarise that sentimental moment in a few words. Let me simplify things for you. On the heap of garbage, a little girl was busy unfolding tight knots of polythene bags filled with garbage. She was searching for food to fill her empty stomach. Suddenly my eyes caught her while she was sucking a raw rotten tomato. My intervention in response to this uneasy situation prevented her from doing this act anymore. Instead, I filled her hands with few pieces of biscuit. Seeing the unusual thing for the first time my reaction was not different from others. I offered her a few bucks and some sympathy as long as she went off sight. But after that unpleasant incident, I asked myself is this the right way to handle the poor. That morning I was there to help her but who will share his/ her meal with such kinds of kids who are grieving for food. Who is going to replace me the following day?Identifying the Penniless: Our surroundings are full of such kind of people who suffer a lot to get a loaf of bread. We see poor children dying on roads every day. Usually, they meet with an accident while stopping vehicles to ask for money. Homeless beggars sleeping on footpaths don’t know whether they will wake up next morning or not. Our sisters can’t safeguard their chastity on roads for want of money. We all see poor people lying on roadways, outside religious places, parking zones, gardens, ATMs, etc. But have we ever thought about why these people block our roads and gateways and prompt us to drop some coins in the begging bowl? If you develop close contact with such kind of people you will hear a new tragic story after every second person. The reality behind unhygienic poor people is they are struggling for food in such a way as a common man for chasing wild desires. They don’t have enough money to focus on other necessities of life. They can’t afford to buy a fresh piece of cloth from a shop and wear it to look decent. You will always see them in ragged clothes. It is necessary to know their worries rather than cursing them. Yes like everything else the beggers too can be divided into many categories. Some of them are very poor and deserve our attention. While many vicious thugs adopt this easy way to collect money and spend it on drugs, liquor, etc. Nowadays you can see a good number of them (especially youth) in J&K who are indulged in such mischievous acts. But that doesn’t mean we should stop helping the poor. We must see a way forward to deal with such kind of issues in society so that we can help the only deserving population.Help the Hapless: Remember you can’t help the poor by giving away money only. Your money can allow them to fulfill their daily needs such as food, medicine, etc. If you want to help them to get over the hardships of life then you must continue to support their little efforts. To achieve this goal you can help them in multiple ways. You can build their confidence by giving valuable advice to beat the hardships of life. If they are healthy enough search for suitable jobs for them. If they can’t earn join hands with a few more to help from your earnings every month. Try to get them out of this situation. Also, it is not important to help every person which you come through every day. It is more than sufficient if you deal with a single person for many years in your locality. Let us not look at Government schemes for the complete mitigation of poverty. It is not easy for developing countries like India to get rid of poverty easily. Though government launches such kinds of schemes from time to time but as true citizens we have to assist the state in the complete mitigation of poverty. My Take: In this situation, when there arise many questions regarding the problems faced by poor people. There must be some hidden answers that need to be discovered. Let me hear from you. What is your take on this issue? How can we save these children from threat of vulnerable diseases? I want every person to get involved in this discussion and find some suitable solutions to follow up. After thinking about this issue for hours I concluded that there must operate a small group in every district that should have at least one member from every village. In this way, we may be able to register every single person who needs our assistance to this specific group. Regarding the fund, it can be raised from many sources and deposited in that particular group’s account. The easiest way is to collect Ushur, Zakat, etc. from every village through village representatives. Many issues in society can’t be dealt with individually. For those issues, we need to work as a team. So hurry up and help poor by initiating a meaningful discussion.
