JAMMU/SRINAGAR: The winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday celebrated Gurpurab, the 551st Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev here with religious fervour and gaiety.Attired in colourful dresses, members of the Sikh community, including women and children this morning, thronged Gurudwaras, religious congregations and offered special prayers on the occasion. The main function was held at Gurdwara Sri Guru Nanak Devi, Chand Nagar, situated in the heart of the city. Hundreds of Sikhs from different parts of the city and outskirts visited the Gurudwara to offer the prayers. Meanwhile, special Langars were also organised for the devotees in the Gurudwaras.Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police Jammu Zone, Mukesh Singh greeted the people on the auspicious occasion of the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Devi. Singh in his message said that the birth day of Guru Nanak Dev which is celebrated not only across the nation but also all across the world with great fervour and enthusiasm reminds us of the life and teaching of Guru Nanak Dev.“Guru Nanak Dev teaches us all to have the courage and strength to fight evil and always stand by the side of truth. May the noble ideal of Guru Nanak Devi Ji permeate within us and usher in peace, prosperity and happiness in our lives,” he said.Similarly, Gurpurab was celebrated with religious fervour and gaiety in the Valley where the main function was held at Shaheed Bunga Gurdwara in Barzulla area here where thousands of devotees attended the special prayers.Amid pandemic, a large number of Sikh brethren following the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) thronged the Gurdwaras from the wee hours and participated in the special prayers.The functions on the occasion were organized almost at Gurdwara while unlike the previous years, the main function was held at Shaheed Bunga Gurdwara in Barzulla Baghat area.The members from Sikh community that the main function was not held this year at Chattipadshahi Gurdwara as the religious place is being renovated at present.Similar celebrations were also held in other local Gurdwaras including Jawahar Nagar, Allochibagh, Barzulla, Tral, Rangreth, Pattan and Baramulla and others.Gurdwaras were beautifully decorated to mark the occasion. Sikh community had also illuminated their respective houses in evening.Senior Superintendent of Traffic Police City Jammu Shiv Kumar Sharma also reviewed the arrangements for Gurpurab. He directed to all the DySPs, DTIs and SOs to work in close coordination and synergy to put in place requisite traffic arrangements for smooth celebration of Shri Guru Nanak Dev’s Birth Anniversary.
