JAMMU: The latest observations of the former Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Ghulam Nabi Azad have vindicated the views of Gaurav-e-Duggar over the boycott of National Conference Members of Parliament in the proceedings of the Delimitation Commission. If a doctor turned politician could understand the nuances and niceties of politics despite being in the arena for just twelve years, why did those in the ‘game’ for generations play truant? The answer obviously is to play politics with malicious intent.Soon after the first meeting of the Delimitation Commission for Jammu and Kashmir four days ago, Union Minister of State in Prime Minister’s Office Dr Jitendra Singh had hit out at National Conference MP Dr Farooq Abdullah and his two colleagues in the Lok Sabha for skipping the meeting, observing that it is a delimitation exercise and not a platform for political posturing nor does it get registered with Election Commission.“It’s (Delimitation Commission) a constitutionally constituted body. Any stand taken against it is itself unconstitutional. When a member refuses to attend the meeting, he is denying the voices of his electorate being heard in this forum,” Dr Singh had said, adding that on one hand, these members stand in Parliament and say that we should have an elected Legislative Assembly in Jammu and Kashmir but when a positive headway is made in that direction, they refuse to cooperate. They owe an answer to people who have sent them to Parliament. And, that is what has been endorsed by Ghulam Nabi Azad, who has suggested that the participation of the National Conference in the Delimitation Commission process would have given representation to people of Jammu and Kashmir, saying that the boycott is not a “good thing.. He said that the National Conference has a majority as they have three parliament members and all of them were appointed as the members of the Delimitation Commission, which would have made “our case strong”, however, they choose to stay away.By questioning the boycott of National Conference MPs in the Commission meeting, Dr Jitendra Singh has, in fact, put them at the back-foot. Now they have either to attend the next meeting without being pestered, as they were used to, or face the consequences of losing their case once the assembly segments are finalised. They will have no moral authority then to complain or brood over. In either case, it will be like their participation in the District Development Council after initially posturing against election politics in the wake of August 5, 2019 developments.Dr Jitendra Singh has played very smart. He has outwitted and unnerved the so-called mainstream Members of Parliament from the Valley. Kashmir mainstream is a classic example of hypocrisy and double standards. They bully and browbeat New Delhi when appeased and they behave when not given any importance. There are no takers for the tantrums of National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party in New Delhi. They understand this very well now.By counters like the ones Dr Jitendra Singh has been demonstrating towards pampered Kashmir mainstream have hugely helped in calling their bluff. They have sustained for long by flexing their muscles. Now they feel that much water has flown down the Jhelum. Kashmir mainstream’s position is like “Na Idar Ke Rahe, Na Udar Ke”. This is because of their much inflated balloon being punctured by the son-of-soil, who understands their state of mind, which has been on display for decades. It is not for the first time Dr Jitendra has called the bluff of the National Conference and other so-called mainstream parties of the Valley. He has taken them, including the Congress, to the task earlier as well on the issue of the abrogation of Article 370. He had observed that if they (NC and Congress leaders) do not approve of Parliament having passed the Bill to abrogate Article 370, then in the interest of parliamentary propriety, they should resign from their membership of Parliament. Did any of them do so? No! This is how a dare from a matured politician works. (TO BE CONTINUED…)
