Farooq Abdullah has done it again. After playing China card over the issues of abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35A, perhaps in a fit of excitement or in a calculated manner, the former Chief Minister has openly come in support of illegally settled Rohingya Muslims in the Jammu region. In an unsolicited advice, he has asked the Centre to behave humanely with Rohingyas, who are under severe security scanner currently. According to reports 168 illegal immigrants have already been sent to holding centres in Hiranagar.“India is a signatory to the United Nations Charter on refugees and we should abide by it and work on humanitarian grounds”, this is what precisely Farooq Abdullah told reporters when asked about the drive against illegal settlers in Jammu.Being a former Union Minister and several times Member of Parliament, Farooq Abdullah is expected to know that India has signed neither the 1951 United Nations Refugee Convention nor its 1967 Protocol, which has 140 signatories, an overwhelming majority of the world’s 190-odd nations. Despite that India continues to host a large population of refugees. But when the issue touches sinister dimensions of changing the demography of a particular area and causes threat to the national security, the government cannot be expected to deal the situation on ‘humanitarian grounds’.If Farooq Abdullah’s NC or the PDP are so concerned about the ‘human angle involved in Rohingya’s illegal settlement in Jammu’, why don’t they carry them to Kashmir and bestow hospitality?Whether Farooq Abdullah is serious in his assertion over Rohingya Muslims or not but he has certainly given a lever to the dormant BJP of Jammu, which has lost sheen in its core constituency due to performance deficit during three-years coalition government and after that. Such a statement or observations from a Kashmir-centric politician is enough to ignite political adversaries, as he has himself made the issue communal. The people of Jammu know how the Abdullahs and the National Conference besides the Congress and the PDP treated West Pakistan Refugees and Valmikis over the decades because of their faith. They never showed ‘humanitarian’ face to them, who have made this part of the country their second home for more than seven decades.Since the issue has been made communal, the BJP will play it to the hilt. One wonders over the observations made by Farooq Abdullah at a time when he and his entire party is desperately defending the statement he made on China coming to the rescue of Kashmiris. Is this statement calculated to benefit the BJP? There are strong reasons to believe in affirmative. For BJP, the agenda has come in a platter to take on Kashmir-centric leaders in a bid to reverse anger prevailing among the people against it. Illegal settlement of Rohingyas and Bangladeshis is a matter of concern for the people of Jammu. They know how vulnerable these foreign nationals, illegally staying in the city, are for the security of the nation. They also know that these settlers did not evoke any alarm either among mainstreamists or separatists because religious affiliation of Rohingyas is conducive and convenient for rabble rousers in the Kashmir politics. With the administration launching drive against Rohingyas, the BJP is in its right to take moral grandstanding of keeping up the commitment made time and again. This, together with the ill advised reaction of Farooq Abdullah will hurt the Jammu chapter of Kashmir centric NC, Congress and the PDP the most. They will be on the receiving end for having allowed sinister machinations to cause demographic change in the Duggarland. The task to marginalise the second fiddlers of Kashmir originated political outfits is easy, as Jammuities know that the land of Dogras has remained part of the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir just for ugly reasons-exploitation, discrimination, deprivation-to name a few. Otherwise, they know that the Kashmiri masters would care two hoots for this region, which has virtually been condensed into two and half districts (predominantly inhabited by a particular community), as they have succeeded in changing the nomenclature of districts inhabited by another community as Chenab Valley region and Pir Panchal region. These two regions were unknown before the onset of Pak sponsored terrorism and spread of Wahabi radicalism, ownership of which is clandestinely being claimed by all-the separatists and soft separatists.Farooq Abdullah has done a real favour to the Jammu BJP. They should be indebted to him for giving them a hammer to beat the National Conference in particular across the region. The action against the Rohingyas is being widely hailed by Jammuties.
