Contrary to the tall claims of the government and the Power Development Department to provide uninterrupted power supply to all the sections of electricity consumers during the summer season, the residents of Jammu city and surrounding areas continue to grapple with the problem of scheduled and unscheduled power-cuts.The city residents have been reeling under the impact of intermittent power-cuts during the past one week. The outage lasts up to one hour in many localities. In certain areas, the power cuts are enormous, with no stability in the supply at all. With the city experiencing hot climate since the end of April, the residents are desperately braving the erratic power supply.Som Nath Sharma, a resident of Greater Kailash said,” Power supply was disrupted on Wednesday night and was restored after two hours at 2 AM. We are facing power cuts regularly. These regular power cuts have exposed the tall claims of the government and PDD which were claiming of making Jammu a power surplus since, a long time. The summer season has just begin but the number of power cuts being imposed have already increased. When we are paying our bill on time why should we suffer in this scorching heat?”Monika Sharma and her husband, Arya Veer are COVID-19 patients and living in home isolation. Monika Sharma said, “PDD has made our life a joke. Last night we experienced 2-hrs cut and it was hell. The life in quarantine has become very difficult due to intermittent power failures on a daily-basis.”“It is very tough to manage such power cuts in this hot season and the worst thing happens when the department just acts like an audience, silently watching the play. If the same situation had emerged in Kashmir, the government would have definitely taken some action. It is very unfortunate that the government has always taken Jammu for granted and except making false claims, had done nothing for the people of Jammu,” added Monika.
