‘Rohingyas, Bangladeshis preferred over local
workforce in execution of Devika Project’

JAMMU: In a scathing attack on the BJP, charging its leaders of making false promises to ‘befool people’, former MLA Balwant Singh Mankotia on Sunday took potshots at Minister of State in Prime Minister’s Office Dr Jitendra Singh.
“Dr Jitendra tops the list of BJP leaders making false promises”, Mankotia said, adding that the people of Udhampur have no faith in politicians, especially BJP leaders, who make tall claims about working for the masses but actually do nothing on ground.
In this context, Mankotia referred to, what he termed an instance of exposing the false claims of Dr Jitendra regarding the prestigious project of River Devika in Udhampur. He said the MoS in PMO had asserted that anyone could meet him and discuss or complain against the loopholes in project Devika. The Minister had gone ahead, saying the general public is welcome but this was just to hog media headlines.
“In reality, the actions of Dr Jitendra do not match his words”, Mankotia said, adding that it is like gaining ‘TRP’.
Referring to the visit of Dr Jitendra to Udhampur on June 12, 2021 to review the pace of development on the Devika Project, Mankotia said that several delegations and prominent citizens wanted to meet him and put forward their views and also register complaints with regard to the project. However, the MoS in the PMO flatly refused to meet any of the delegations or citizens, he said adding that Dr Singh even refused to talk to the local media, which was waiting to raise certain issues related to the project.
Mankotia made a sensational allegation that while the local work-force is denied work in the execution of the Devika Project, Rohingyas and Bangladeshis can be seen working there.
“Educated youth are roaming without jobs and the same is true about skilled and unskilled work-force”, Mankotia said, lamenting that the government is preferring to be mute spectator. He said the BJP is only doing politics on development projects and ignoring the local youth.
Balwant Singh Mankotia said, “The work on the Devika Project is going at a very slow pace”.
“Rs 186 crore allocated for the development of Devika are being misused and diverted”, Mankotia said adding that 80 per cent sanctioned funds are used in sewerage treatment plant and not for the development of river Devika.
“Dr Jatindra Singh is just playing politics and is least bothered about the problems being faced by the people of Udhampur”, the former MLA said, adding that under the garb of social distancing protocol, Dr Singh refused to meet people, but he was openly overlooking social distancing norms while meeting BJP leaders and workers.
“Why the public representatives and locals not allowed to meet the MoS in the PMO”, Mankotia asked, saying this exposes his double standards and shows that he is not serious about the development of this project. “Avoiding locals and the media speaks it all and exposes the hypocrisy”, Mankotia observed.
