Dr Jitendra elected ‘Life Patron’ of top national diabetes research organisation



NEW DELHI: Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, who is also a renowned Diabetologist, has been elected as “Life Patron” of “Research Society for Study of Diabetes in India” (RSSDI), the top national Diabetes research organisation as well as the largest and one of the oldest academic organizations of Diabetes research and practitioners in India, founded in 1972 by some of the leading founding fathers of Diabetology in India including Prof Sam G. P. Moses, Prof M. M. S. Ahuja and Prof V. Vishwanath.
Dr. Jitendra happens to be the first-ever medical professional from Jammu & Kashmir and possibly the first from North India also to have been conferred this prestigious honour for his lifetime services to the cause of Diabetes research, study and management.
An announcement to this effect was made by the National Executive Committee of RSSDI headed by its President, Dr. Banshi Saboo and attended among others by President-elect Dr. Vasanth Kumar from Hyderabad and immediate Past President Dr. Rajeev Chawla from New Delhi. Pertinent to mention that the life patrons of RSSDI are elected at national level from among the first ranking physicians of India dealing in Diabetes research and management. Besides Dr. Jitendra Singh, the other life patrons of RSSDI elected are some of the internationally known names like Prof (Dr.) H B Chandalia from Mumbai, Prof (Dr.) Ashok K Das from Punduchery, Prof (Dr.) V. Seshiah from Chennai, Prof (Dr.) V. Mohan from Chennai and Prof (Dr.) B K Sahay from Hyderabad. Profusely thanking the RSSDI Executive Committee for the honour conferred on him, Dr. Jitendra Singh said, he was fortunate to have started his medical career as a Junior Scholar under some of the leading academicians and teachers of Medicine in India at that time and he felt humbled to note that he had been able to contribute, if not wholly at least to some extent, to the expectations of his great teachers and professors.
An alumnus of prestigious Stanley Medical College, Chennai, Dr. Jitendra Singh was Professor of Medicine and Diabetes in Government Medical College Jammu before he resigned from government service to join active politics and then continued private practice in Jammu, which also he gave up when he was called to join the Modi government.
Dr Jitendra Singh is the author of around eight books including monograms on Diabetes and regularly contributed chapters on Diabetes for post-graduate students of Medicine in the ” API (Association of Physicians of India) Textbook of Medicine” in its twelve consecutive editions, one after the other. His pioneering work on “Stress Diabetes in displaced Kashmiri Pandits” earned him laurels from the WHO. He was also a member of the team which drafted Guidelines for Management of Diabetes in Pregnancy, which were later recommended by the WHO to be followed universally.
Dr Jitendra has been an invited faculty and expert in all the major national and South-Asian conferences on Diabetes for the last nearly three decades. Known for his writing skills, he contributed a regular weekly newspaper column “Tales of Travesty” regularly for nearly three decades.
