JAMMU: Flaying proposed Excise Policy for year 2021-22 to allot liquor vends through e-auction, a number of activists of Dogra Front & Shiv Sena (DFSS) under the leadership of its President Ashok Gupta took out a protest rally in Jammu on Saturday.Speaking on the occasion, Ashok Gupta said that new excise policy will affect people of Jammu to a great extent. “The policy, which was for the first time placed in public domain before its issuance, envisages allotment of liquor shops to residents of Union Territory through e-auction. Any person, who is eligible for grant of license as per provisions of excise act and rules, will be eligible for participation in e-auction process,” he added.Gupta further said that LG Manoj Sinha is a Vikaspurush and has always worked for promoting growth of people of Jammu & Kashmir.Demanding continuation of already existing policy, he said that 30,000 families are directly or indirectly earning their livelihood from the business and most of the present licensees are widows, senior citizens and unemployed youth, who have no other source of income. “Rich people can bid a huge amount of money, which is required to run this business as per new draft policy, thus snatching livelihood from small traders and creating a liquor mafia,” said Gupta, adding that new policy will only create liquor mafia as big liquor contractors have started hiring some people with domicile certificates as stooges/ faces and would be taking up maximum number of licenses, thereby leading to formation of a mafia as in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab.Gupta stated that liquor vendors have contributed Rs 2,500 monthly towards Social Responsibility Corpus fund after submitting a proposal to the then J&K Government in 2015-16 and recommended transfer of an amount of Rs 3 crore to J&K relief fund from it, in March 2020 after realising gravity of corona pandemic. They have also donated 13 ambulances and relief items over the years in various areas, he added. Those who were present during the protest included Bantu, Prem, Kalu, Sukhdev, Subhash, Rakesh, Sham, Vijay and Ramesh.
