Degradation of environment

Dear Editor,
I would like to express my views about the environmental degradation through the medium of yours esteemed daily news paper for people and Govt of India.
The environment plays an important role in the healthy living of human beings. It matters a lot because it is only home that human have as it provides air, food and other needs. Humanity’s entire life support system depends on the well being of the environment.
It is the only sole factor for the existence of life on this planet earth, the only planet in our solar system that supports existence of life. In our complex society and amid bad governance no one care about the sustainable environment though it’s fast decay may bring to an early end of life on the planet. Human disturb environment in one or other way.
The degradation has diverse impact on human, plants, animals and micro-organism. In India the major contributor to the environmental damage is the massive deforestation by greedy elements in our society for their self-motivated interests.
This material greed has made us unmindful that the deforestation cause major problems for one simple reason. It decrease the number of trees which clean the environment, provide oxygen and also affect the rain patterns. This is the major reason why there are calls for tree plantation.
It is to make-up for this loss. The other major contributor for environmental degradation in the context of India is urban heat which is direct cause of the unprecedented construction activities that are being carried out unchecked right now.
This individual heat island causes constricted circulation of air, which trap pollutants released in urban areas and does not allow for mixing of air and thereby decreasing the quality of air. In urban areas,
agriculture practices lead to a lot of damage to the sustainable environment due to overloading land with fertilisers, overgrazing and changing agriculture policies, creating soil erosion that lead to silting in rivers and reservoirs.
Soil degradation is a continuous cycle and it ultimately lead to desertification and allowing the direct action of eroding elements on cultivable land. The other main reason of environment degradation currently faced by the country is increasing population as it creates a load that the entire environment had to support, not only in terms of food and lodging burden also in terms of the amount of waste that it generates and ability of the Government to sustain this growth.
Enviromental degradation in form and by any means is responsible for global warming, green house effect, melting of ice and glaciers, rivers floods and change in rainfall pattern. There are few major threats to the environmental degradation in the country which have already done great damages as we have been experiencing unusual climate changes in the happening of long heat spells, rainfall etc.
No one knows what natural untoward is in the making as we unfortunately have no data of scientific research to predict the future. To cope with the environmental situation, we need to make-up optimum use and
management of resources, sustainable development, adoption of green concept and above all community
participation in all developmental activities otherwise Chamoli like incidents will takes place in any part of the country.
Though it is not likely to expect timely
alertness from the Government, still we hope that the Government will come our from hibernation and do something serious to at least contain the environmental situation from further degradation.
Last but not least, we must look forward that individual citizens should contribute their bit in revival of conducive environment in the country through massive campaigns for tree plantation and encouraging the people to shift to environmental friendly construction. We should practically work on ‘Teach One Each One Plant One’ drive.
