Jammu/Srinagar: The credit for increase in the intake capacity of medical colleges in Jammu and Kashmir goes to the Congress led UPA Govt and the then Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. This was stated by JKPCC Chief Spokesperson Ravinder Sharma, here in Saturday.
he said that the credit for enhancement of MBBS seats from 300 to 1100 over the period of time due to increase in the intake capacity of existing medical colleges, besides sanctioning of five new medical colleges in J&K goes to Congress led UPA Govt and the then Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Gulam Nabi Azad.
The present dispensation, rather, delayed the execution of the sanctioned five new medical colleges and it took them seven years to take off these projects, he said.
Ravinder said that it was Congress led UPA Govt which gave special attention to the needs of health and medical facilities and creation of health infrastructure in J&K and took several landmark initiatives under the then Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare.
The intake capacity of medical colleges of Jammu, Srinagar and Jehlum Valley was doubled from 300 to 600 by an executive order thereby talented youth got the opportunity to undertake prestigious MBBS courses.
Further, it was again UPA Govt which sanctioned five medical colleges for Jammu and Kashmir – three in Kathua, Doda and Rajouri besides Baramulla and Anantnag for Kashmir valley, besides sanctioning and upgradation of various health institutions in Jammu and Kashmir, Sharma said.
It is the result of initiatives of UPA Govt headed by Dr. Manmohan Singh and the efforts of then Union Health and Welfare Ministry headed by Gulam Nabi Azad that such major initiatives were taken for J&K, as a result the total intake capacity in the MBBS has gone up from 300 to 1100 over these years in the existing medical colleges and the five new medical colleges sanctioned in J&K, said Ravinder.
Sharma further said that the credit for huge increase in the intake capacity of MBBS seats goes to UPA Govt not the present BJP Govt, the later rather delayed the process for the execution of the sanctioned medical colleges for seven long years.
