NAGROTA: The Jammu and Kashmir Congress unit on Monday staged a protest at Nagrota against the BJP-led Centre over the hike in the prices of petrol, diesel and cooking gas, besides property tax.
Carrying placards and denouncing the unprecedented and unjustified hike, the Congress leaders and workers raised slogans against the BJP government at Nagrota while demanding immediate rollback of the property tax orders.
Congress leaders also targeted the government for the steep hike in the prices of LPG cylinders and accused it of looting poor people by raising the fuel prices.
“The incessant hike in fuel prices is an additional burden on the common people who are at the limit of their woes owing to the COVID-19 induced lockdown for months,” said Shiv Dev Singh, former MLA and senior Congress leader while addressing the gathering.
He said the poor and the middle class have been severely hit by the recent hikes.
“BJP’s claim of providing pro-people governance stands exposed as the Central government has miserably failed to address the issues affecting the general public,” he added.
While demanding rollback of property tax, Senior Congress leader Mula Ram said the government is now terrorizing the people by saying “if you won’t pay tax, you will face consequences and we are on roads for terrorizing people.”
He said that the government has failed to provide basic facilities to the people but have succeeded in levying taxes only.
“At a time when the unemployment rate is increasing, instead of taking pro-people steps, they are putting more and more burden on them,” he added.
President JKPYC Udey Singh Chiv, speaking on the occasion, said that the increase in prices of petroleum products was beyond imagination.
He said the government failed to fulfill its tall claims as it did not provide any relief to the poverty-stricken people.
He added that rulers were imposing new taxes on people and increasing prices of daily use items to meet their own expenditures.
“The government should take back the decision to increase petrol and diesel prices. This is going to cause a new wave of inflation in the country,” he said.
General Secretary JKPCC Manmohan Singh said “We believe the ‘Achche Din’ that the Modi government spoke about, and shies away from, is nowhere in sight.”
“We demand these prices and excise duty increase be rolled back. The excise duty structure and the excise collections will be paused for a while and the government will give relief to the common man because of the unprecedented situation and the government’s prime duty is to bring more relief to the people,” he said.
It is now an open secret that the BJP government does not believe in welfare but is launching economic warfare against its own citizens,” he alleged and demanded that BJP immediately lower fuel prices.
