JAMMU: The climax of Indian National Congress aka Congress (I or Indira) and again Indian National Congress has now entered into a crucial stage with just two options-Congress Mukt Bharat or Gandhis Mukt Congress.Though the recent formation of Group of 23 or G23 can’t be termed a formal split yet the day is not far when demarcation lines will get drawn with senior leaders thinking afresh about the future of the grand old party. Splits in the Congress are not new. Since 1947, it has fractured 7o times and given birth to parties like Swatantra Party, Kerala Congress, Congress (I), Congress (O), Bharatiya Kranti Dal, Trinamol Congress of Mamta Banerjee, Nationalist Congress Party of Sharad Pawar, Peoples’ Democratic Party of Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, YSR Congress of Jaganmohan Reddy-to cite a few divisions. The turning points in the Congress came when Indira Gandhi asked the then finance minister, Morarji Desai, to quit in 1969. He resigned but the formal division came after sometime, prompting the Election Commission of India to freeze the Congress election symbol – a pair of bullocks. Mrs Gandhi got a new symbol – the cow with a calf. Desai’s Congress (O) had a woman with a spinning wheel. The cow-and-calf symbol was frozen following another split in 1978, when Mrs Gandhi formed the Congress (I). The short-lived Congress(R), led by Brahmanand Reddy got the Charkha. Successive disputes in the Congress have been more than just symbolic. With stalwarts leaving, the Congress started shrinking and becoming fiefdom of the family-the Nehru-Gandhi clan. And, now the situation has come when it cannot stretch beyond to bring the Vadra clan into the fold. With the last scion losing the grip, in the wake of losing election after election in the states, resigning from the presidency in a whimsical manner and again gearing up to hold the top slot, the Congress is showcasing its trauma. The boat seems to be sinking now. During earlier splits, the challengers were from within the extended Congress family but now the real threat is from Narendra Modi’s BJP.On January 1, 2019, Narendra Modi told a national television channel what he actually meant from the term Congress Mukt Bharat. He said he wanted to rid India of a culture and way of thinking, which some Congressmen believe the party to be. He said that the Congress too needs to be Mukt or free of the Congress culture. When the Prime Minister referred to ‘some Congressmen’ did he mean leaders like Ghulam Nabi Azad?Azad has emerged as the face of G23. Yesterday’s show of strength in Jammu and presence of top national leaders indicate how they want to take on the Gandhis. Without mincing words, they gave vent to their anger over the treatment meted out to the former Leader of Opposition, saying his services should have been utilised, given his vast experience and contribution in different capacities. They almost echoed Prime Minister Modi, who in an emotional farewell in Rajya Sabha, had recalled how Ghulam Nabi Azad had conducted himself during the terror attack and killing of a group of Gujarat tourists in the Valley in 2006, saying the person who will replace the Congress leader will find it tough to match his contribution.Narendra Modi played his part!Days after, Ghulam Nabi Azad responded and reciprocated. He praised the Prime Minister, saying Modi speaks frankly about his past as a tea-seller and does not try to hide his background from the world.“I admire several things about a number of leaders… I am from a village and I am proud of it. A big leader, our prime minister, says he is from a village, he used to sell tea. We may have political differences, but at least he doesn’t hide his reality”.Azad’s message is loud and clear to ace Modi bashers in the Congress, Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, who have branded the Prime Minister as “Chowkidar Chor Hai”, “Khoon Ki Dalali”, “Maut Ka Saudagar” and what not.Praise versus praises can’t be just mutual courtesies. How the things settle down in the Congress in days to come will be interested to watch. Stage is set for the act to go on. (To be continued)
