JAMMU: Young Chess champion, Arushi Kotwal, 17, has been conferred with Rashtriya Bal Puraskar by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports on the eve of Republic Day.
Young Chess Master with many national and international accolades, Arushi has represented India several times in various championships and aspires to become a Grand Master.
Daughter of qualified chess official (Arbiter), Anil Kotwal of village Naska Chinta, Bhaderwah in district Doda, Arushi won three silver and a bronze medal in 14th Asian Schools Chess Championship held in 2018 at Sri Lanka.
Chess prodigy Arushi Kotwal has been conferred with State Award for the year 2016. The award carries Rs 51,000 cash prize and Gold medal.
Arushi is the youngest player of State to get the Sher-e-Kashmir Sports award for the year 2011-12 at the age of seven years.
She is the first and only one chess player from Jammu and Kashmir, who has been awarded WCM title by World Chess Federation for winning Silver medal in Western Asian Chess Championship (2018) at Taskent, Uzbekistan.
Besides this WCM Arushi is the only player who has won medals in all three formats of Chess game (Standard, Rapid and Blitz).

“Arushi Kotwal is the only woman master title player of Jammu and Kashmir. She has already won several medals at national & international level. After having represented India at Commonwealth Chess Championship, she wants to be become a Grand Master. #BetiBharatKi,” Smriti Irani, Minister of Women and Child Development of India wrote on his twitter handle.
