New Delhi: The Centre on Thursday asked all states and union territories to conduct rigorous screening and testing of all international travellers coming from or transiting through South Africa, Hong Kong and Botswana, where a new COVID-19 variant of serious public health implications has been reported.In a letter address to additional chief secretary/principal secretary/secretary (Health) of all states and union territories, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan asked them to ensure that samples of travellers turning positive are sent to designated genome sequencing laboratories promptly.
J&K reports 182 new COVID cases, Ladakh 28SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday recorded 182 new cases of coronavirus, taking the infection tally to 3,36,063 while no fresh death due to the virus was reported in the last 24 hours, officials said.Of the new cases, 33 were reported from the Jammu division and 149 from the Kashmir division, they said.Srinagar district recorded the highest of 69 cases J&K reports 182…followed by 32 cases in Baramulla district, they said.There are 1,706 active cases in the Union Territory, while the number of recovered patients was 3,29,891, officials said.The death toll due to the pandemic stands at 4,466, they said.There were 49 confirmed cases of mucormycosis (black fungus) in the Union Territory as no fresh case was reported, the official said/Meanwhile, one person died of COVID-19 while 28 fresh cases were registered in Ladakh, officials said.All of these 28 cases were reported in Leh, they said.With this, the overall cases registered in the Union Territory have shot up to 21,397 while the overall death toll has climbed to 213.The active cases have come down to 225, of which 210 are in Leh and 15 in Kargil, the officials said.The latest death was reported from Leh. Of the total COVID-19-related deaths in the Union Territory since the outbreak of the pandemic, 155 were reported in Leh and 58 in Kargil, they said.Another 28 patients were cured and discharged from hospitals in Leh, taking the total number of recoveries to 20,959, the officials said.A total of 1,253 fresh sample reports in Ladakh showed negative results, they said.
It has now been reported by National Centra for Disease Control (NCDC) that multiple cases of a COVID-19 variant B.1.1529 have been reported in Botswana (3 cases), South Africa (6 cases) and Honk Kong (1 case), Bhushan said in the letter.“This variant is reported to have a significantly high number of mutations, and thus, has serious public health implications for the country, in view of recently relaxed visa restrictions and opening up of international travel. “It is therefore imperative that all international travellers travelling from and transiting through these countries, (they are part of the “at risk” country category of international travellers coming to India) and also including all other at risk’ countries indicated in the revised Guidelines for International Arrivals issued by this Ministry dated November 11,2021, are subjected to rigorous screening and testing, as per MoHFW Guidelines,” Bhushan said.The contacts of these international travellers must also be closely tracked and tested as per MoHFW guidelines.
